| Evidence of Kitty Naughtiness :P |

So, I got a MacBook for doing some web development testing in OSX. It came with this app called "Photo Booth", which I found useful today for getting evidence of what I have to deal with while trying to work. Freckles has recently decided that he needs to constantly be wrapped around my neck when I am here, whether I am sitting here working or walking into the kitchen... he is there.

| History of Computing Museum? |
[Jan. 15th, 2006|07:07 pm] |
Have I ever mentioned that I am a packrat? I have serious problems throwing stuff away, including several boxes of old hardware. While doing some cleaning today, I discovered a few items lying on my desk that made me question my odd packrat habits. I should probably just sell big boxes of hardware on eBay or something, because we know I am never going to make that beowulf cluster I once joked about. Anthony suggested maybe making a museum in my basement. There is room actually...
Some of the items found on my desk:

It is very problematic when your roommate is wearing the same shirt that you are wearing! ;P d0ct0rvenkman and I are both wearing this shirt today: http://www.thinkgeek.com/tshirts/ladies/5a8d/ Except his is a more manly version *G* I haven't been wearing my "$> cd /pub $> more beer", because he has that too and I almost wore it a few times when he did. Well, as long as he doesn't start stealing my clothes ... |

I just saw the word "winsock" somewhere and had a flash back about copying winsock32.dll... made me think of a few other things. Do you remember games where you had to select CGA or EGA? Did you have modem init strings memorized? If so, you might just be a dinosaur like me! ;P |

"The Tandy 1000 HX computer is a truly functional one-drive PC- compatible, designed to provide a new dimension in ease of use, without any sacrifice in performance. Tandy executives say the $699 HX's unique features represent more technology per dollar than any other MS-DOS computer can claim. The MS-DOS operating system is contained in read only memory (ROM), eliminating the need for an ever-present MS-DOS disk."
"Supplied with one 3.5-inch 720Kb drive, the HX will accept a second 3.5-inch internal drive, and an external 5.25-inch drive. Standard memory is 256Kb, expandable to 640Kb."
That thing wasn't good for much of anything until I installed that beautiful 300-baud ;P
update:
While looking for a picture of my 300 baud modem, I found this:
"To give you an idea of how slow 300 baud was, imagine that all you had for a modem was a 300 baud sucker and you wanted to download The Phantom Menace trailer. When I was a kid downloading 50-100K files, I used to be able to go out to the kitchen, make a snack, come back and it’d still be downloading. If you were downloading the Star Wars trailer (15 megs) with the 300 baud modem, you could leave the room, go to college, do a year in the Peace Corps, come back, make a snack, and it still wouldn’t be done. :-) So look, you younguns out there, I don’t want to hear your whining about how you can’t connect to AOL at full speed with your 56K modem. You don’t know what slow is."
*g* Oh yeah... I remember those days ;P Could read much faster than it could spit out a line of text ;P |

I got off the phone a little while ago with my first real BF, my first love. He decided to look me up. We were both SysOps of BBSes... That is how we met. It seems most of my serious relationships have been with people I have met online. That call really took me for a trip down memory lane... *sigh* |

I first installed my 300 baud modem in 1987, when I was 7 years old. This is the first year I accessed an online community. I could read much faster than the 300 baud could spit out information! ;P Sometimes I would do other things while waiting for a page of text to load ;P I didn't start really BBSing until around 1992. I am not sure when I first made my own BBS, but it was shortly after I started BBSing. I was in a couple Ansi Art/VGA Art/mod/s3m/coding groups. I made the ANSIs for several of the local BBSes. The best thing about BBSing was the debates. Religious debates excluded. Those were often annoying. Many BBSes were only into doors (games) such as the very popular LoRD (Legend of the Red Dragon.) I met my first love BBSing. He was a SysOp of a nearby BBS and I was a SysOp as well. And also a CoSysOp on several other BBSes. Those were the days *sigh* |
