Someone needs to start a decent cafe near Google. I have tried to locate one today with no luck. There is a place right near Google called Michael's Cafe, but for some reason the wifi doesn't work there and they don't really have much choice coffee wise. It is more of an eating place. There only seems to be Starbucks around here. Oddly Google Maps showed one pretty much in one of their parking lots and there definitely isn't one there. It might be in another building around there, I dunno.

Ever since I moved into my loft I have been thinking a lot about the way towns are laid out here in the states. One of my favorite things about living in Europe was that it was easy to walk everywhere you needed to go. If there was a grocery store near my loft I would be totally set. There are places to eat, parks, museums / galleries, and even an extremely noisy club right next to me ;P, but the nearest grocery store is a bit of a stretch (2-3 miles).

On the walk to this cafe I noticed there were tons of businesses clumped together, all single story buildings, with no restaurants or housing nearby. I can see some benefits to it, but generally it really doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

The entire south bay is built for cars. There are a couple tolerable places to sit and drink coffee in "downtown" Mountain View (I use that term loosely) like Red Rock or the cafe upstairs in Books Inc, but even those are mostly full of laptop-people, not real cozy. Generally you need to go up to SF to find Quality Walking-Oriented Neighborhoods.

Ah well, I am one of those laptop-people :P I was actually looking for a decent place to work. I was working under a tree for a bit, while enjoying the nice weather, but it is hard to see the screen during the day and I needed to plug in ;P I have been to those cafes :) They are nice enough, but a bit of a walk from Google.

That's kind of like my neighborhood here in Seattle. I live on Lower Queen Anne. I'm only a couple of blocks away from three grocery stores, several coffee shops, a couple of clubs, a theater, the Pacific Science Center and the Space Needle.

As far as neighborhoods go, this is probably the best one that I've lived in...in any place ever. Of course, I grew up in a town of less than 4,000 people then moved to a town of 100,000 for part of college...still in Oklahoma, though, where everything is spread out and is very much a driving culture.

But yes. I have pretty much everything I need nearby. And what isn't nearby, I can reach on my bike.
